Course Introduction
United States History builds on the skills, concepts and historical perspectives. It is a study of the emergence of American society and culture. This includes an examination of the establishment of this nation as a geographic and political entity, development and interplay of the nation’s social institutions, and the approaches Americans have used to face both domestic and international problems. Since a multi-ethnic/multi-cultural/non-sexist approach is used throughout this course, students will better understand and appreciate the pluralistic nature of American society. In addition, the course deals extensively with learning how to read, understand, analyze and interpret a wide variety of both primary and secondary texts together with the maps, graphs and pictorial materials associated with them. United States History 1 emphasizes the colonial period, the American Revolution, the Constitution and the development and launching of the federal system of government, sectionalism, manifest destiny, the Civil War, and Reconstruction.
